The biggest benefit for us as an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure customer is the service and support that our engineering team can access when we're growing our product feature set using Oracle services. Often, we're working in uncharted territory and having that service and support means we can build as quickly as our customers are asking for new features.

The Australian software company provides a platform for government agencies, law enforcement, and enterprises that need to share highly sensitive information. Along with strong security, the company’s platform must deliver maximum availability and performance to meet the time-sensitive communication needs of its customers. Frustrated with the limitations of previous cloud providers, DekkoSecure migrated its computing platform to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), gaining strong security and capabilities such as Oracle Autonomous Database and OCI Database with PostgreSQL. The move gave the company more flexibility, including dynamic infrastructure configuration to match customer workloads and the ability to quickly deploy in new regions globally.

Why DekkoSecure chose Oracle

DekkoSecure’s collaboration and file sharing platform is designed for industries with elevated security needs, such as government agencies, law enforcement, national security, defense, financial institutions, and healthcare. Its cloud-based service also facilitates document editing, video conferencing, and sensitive data storage for organizations of all sizes.

Because the company’s customers use the platform to share critical documents and data, they require a highly reliable collaboration service. Yet DekkoSecure struggled to get adequate technical support from previous cloud infrastructure partners, who also lacked flexibility in configuring hardware and software. As a result, the company couldn’t quickly adapt infrastructure to changing customer workload needs. It also used a proprietary database technology that wasn’t cloud native, supplied limited scalability and performance capabilities, and was difficult to manage.

The company decided to migrate its computing platform from another cloud provider to OCI due to Oracle’s superior support, service, and technical capabilities. OCI’s confidential compute technology was a major draw, because it would help the company address security challenges experienced with previous cloud companies and spur development of new platform features not possible before. The company also saw an opportunity to migrate its core application to OCI Database with PostgreSQL and use the autoscaling and self-patching Oracle Autonomous Database, which would offer a more flexible, cost-effective way to support its expanding business.

Results

The company’s migration to OCI, Oracle Autonomous Database, and OCI Database with PostgreSQL not only enhanced its technology stack and platform capabilities, but also helped DekkoSecure provide an innovative and cost-effective service for budget-constrained clients, such as government and law enforcement agencies.

Because its customers’ workloads vary a lot, sometimes hour to hour or even minute to minute, the company needed to match hardware and software configurations to actual use in the real world. OCI, Oracle Autonomous Database, and OCI Database with PostgreSQL delivered that configuration flexibility behind the scenes, allowing the company to provide a scalable, cost effective, and high performing platform. The migration helped reduce PostgreSQL costs by 50%.

With previous cloud infrastructure services, the company found that some cybersecurity tools prevented rather than enhanced collaboration, making it difficult to supply secure document and data sharing. OCI’s confidential compute technology encrypts and isolates in-use data and the applications processing that data, which helps DekkoSecure boost its collaboration platform with an additional layer of security for sensitive document handling. The company also used confidential compute to launch and support its live document editing capability and strengthen it with end-to-end encryption.

As the organization expanded internationally, OCI’s global network of cloud regions, which all use the same architecture, allowed DekkoSecure to expand from its Australian roots with new platform instances in Switzerland, the United States, Canada, India, and the Netherlands. OCI also helped the company reduce infrastructure overhead and focus more on product development rather than on infrastructure and database management.
