NTT Docomo Business technology powers the Asia-Pacific region

NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS provides global information and communications technology solutions including cloud, network, and security services across more than 60 cities and 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Five years ago, the company faced a major data center consolidation decision as it prepared to migrate its mission-critical Oracle Exadata production and disaster recovery environments, which support the network monitoring required to operate continuously, 24 hours a day.

Oracle Autonomous AI Database simplifies operations for a seamless modernization

NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS sought a new platform that could help reduce costs and simplify its operations. The company chose to migrate its Oracle Exadata workloads to Oracle Autonomous AI Database running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) for a fully managed database platform. After validating network latency and confirming that the performance was virtually equivalent, the company decided to proceed with the migration. Since the same Oracle AI Database runs on Oracle Exadata and Oracle Autonomous AI Database, migrating to the cloud was quick and required minimal changes.

Migration leads to improved productivity, availability, and efficiency

Oracle Autonomous AI Database eliminated most of the complex administration for NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS staff, including performance tuning, backups, and patching, ultimately reducing DBA workloads by nearly 50%. Hardware failures and software upgrade tasks that had previously required DBA involvement have largely disappeared, allowing the NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS team to focus on higher-value work such as collaborating with business leaders for more data-driven decision-making. Additionally, NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS’s infrastructure costs decreased by 28% via CPU-based consumption pricing while running about 400 servers reliably on Oracle Autonomous AI Database.

Continuous updates enable greater security against AI threats

Oracle Autonomous AI Database has also helped improve NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS’s security since Oracle continuously applies the latest patches with zero downtime, including protections against emerging AI-driven threats. NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS intends to leverage Oracle’s early patch availability to perform regression testing to further strengthen the reliability of its services. The company also plans to take advantage of Oracle Autonomous AI Database’s flexibility and ease of use by expanding its adoption as NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS’s standard database-as-a-service platform for operations.
