“By aligning our workflows with the latest evidence, we ensure every transfusion is medically necessary, reducing risks for our patients and preserving a vital resource for our community.”
St. Joseph’s Health is a leading healthcare system dedicated to providing innovative care and fostering a healthier future for its community. The organization prioritized the expansion of its patient blood management program to address two critical issues: a national shortage of blood products and the high frequency of clinical complications resulting from improper transfusion practices. It chose to collaborate with Oracle Health value advisory services to implement a proven methodology and clinical decision support within Oracle Health Foundation EHR. By integrating new documentation that automatically surfaces laboratory results in near real time, the solution prompts physicians to review evidence-based guidelines before placing blood product orders. This physician-led initiative has successfully shifted the culture toward data-driven safety protocols. Patient safety outcomes have been strong, with 7,690 fewer RBC transfusions and 1,365 fewer platelet transfusions administered over the 45-month monitoring period.[1] Over the same period, the initiative generated $2,708,758 in direct savings (blood and platelets) and $7,236,602 in total savings when including transfusion-related costs (estimated at $500 per event).[2]
