Automatic Storage Management

Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) simplifies database storage management while optimizing performance and availability. Automatically distribute and rebalance database files as storage changes, with optional mirroring for protection against disk failures.

Oracle Automatic Storage Management Overview

TopicDescription
OverviewAutomatic Storage Management (ASM) is a storage management technology purpose-built and optimized for Oracle Database. ASM implements the Stripe and Mirror Everything (SAME) methodology, automatically distributing data across available storage devices, thereby simplifying storage management while delivering high performance and availability.
Key Benefits
  • Simplify Storage Management – Manage groups of disks as a single logical unit rather than managing individual disks.
  • Optimize Storage Performance – Distribute data and I/O across available storage to help avoid performance bottlenecks on individual disks.
  • Increase Data Availability – Protect against disk failures by maintaining mirrored copies of data across separate failure groups.
  • Scale Storage Online – Add, remove, or resize storage while ASM automatically redistributes data across the disk group.
  • Reduce Administrative Overhead – Automate database file placement, data distribution, and storage rebalancing as storage configurations change.
Key Capabilities
  • ASM Disk Groups – Organizes disks into disk groups that are managed as a single logical unit, simplifying storage provisioning and management.
  • Automatic Data Striping – Stripes data across disks in a disk group to distribute I/O and optimize storage performance.
  • Data Mirroring and Failure Groups – Provides optional redundancy by placing mirrored copies of data across separate failure groups to protect against storage failures.
  • Online Storage Rebalancing – Automatically redistributes data across a disk group when storage is added, removed, or resized while database operations continue.
  • Automatic Database File Management – Automates the placement and management of Oracle Database files within ASM disk groups.
Architecture
  • Oracle ASM, together with Oracle Clusterware, forms Oracle Grid Infrastructure, the foundation for Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC). ASM simplifies storage management by organizing storage into disk groups that are managed as a single logical unit.
  • Oracle Database files are assigned to ASM disk groups rather than individual disks. ASM automatically manages file placement, data striping, and optional mirroring across disks within a disk group to optimize performance and help protect against storage failures. As storage is added, removed, or resized, ASM automatically rebalances data across the disk group while database operations continue.
  • ASM also provides the underlying storage management for Oracle Advanced Cluster File System (ACFS), extending ASM-managed storage to application files and other data outside Oracle Database.
