Oracle ACFS

Architecture

Oracle ACFS has always been integrated with Oracle Automatic Storage Management extending its functionalities to support general purpose files as well as database files; even while it was temporarily called Oracle Cloud File System for this purpose. Oracle ACFS is designed to have direct access to Oracle ASM disk group storage for the shortest IO path to deliver optimal performance. Oracle ACFS underlying extent-based architecture provides fast file access, high throughput and fast response time.

Oracle ACFS leverages Oracle Clusterware functionality allowing for direct involvement in cluster membership state transitions and resource-based high availability. Oracle ACFS, ADVM, Oracle ASM and Oracle Clusterware, all combined, make up the Oracle Grid Infrastructure (GI). Oracle GI is a tightly integrated foundation to manage databases, volumes and file systems in cluster environments, simplifying storage and cluster management, and greatly reducing complexity and costs.

Oracle ASM Cluster File System (ACFS)

Oracle ACFS provides unprecedented simplicity in storage management and automation in provisioning file systems for all types of purposes. Oracle ACFS is managed using native operating system commands, acfsutil cross platform commands and the Oracle Grid Control. The unique value of Oracle ACFS lies in its advanced functionalities that includes Encryption, Security, Auditing, Compression, Snapshot, Role Reversal Replication, Tagging, Freezing, Thawing and Highly Available NFS as well as plug-ins to access IO statistics programmatically. Oracle ACFS is supported across OS platforms including Linux, Solaris, AIX and Windows.

The Oracle ASM Dynamic Volume Manager (ADVM) provides a common volume management service and a standard device driver interface for system administrators to manage volumes across different platforms. Oracle ACFS can use Oracle ADVM to create and manage file systems leveraging all the power and functionality of Oracle ASM features. An Oracle ADVM volume may be easily resized to adapt to the storage needs of a file system without any downtime.

Oracle RAC Family of Solutions
