Oracle Customer Success—8x8

8x8 moves to Oracle Cloud from AWS amid explosive growth, saves 80%

As video meetings quickly became the connective tissue of today’s new world, we saw our user count soar. To support that exponential growth, we looked at several platforms and chose Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for its strong security, outstanding price/performance, and world-class support.

— Vik Verma, CEO, 8x8

As businesses and organizations raced to ramp up videoconferencing, 8x8 moved to Oracle from AWS for better performance and superior cost savings.
Business Challenge
  • 8x8, a leading integrated cloud communications platform, saw use of its video meetings solutions take off as COVID-19 spread. Usage of its private and secure video meetings solutions, including Jitsi Meet and 8x8 Video Meetings, exceeded 20 million monthly active users worldwide, resulting in it serving 1.5 petabytes of video data to users daily.
  • As videoconferencing became the standard for remote working, customer engagement, distance learning, and telehealth, 8x8 needed to hyperscale quickly to support demand, while also stemming its soaring cloud computing costs. “I was stunned by the adoption,” says 8x8 CEO Vik Verma.
  • The benefits 8x8 is getting from moving to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure include significant cost reductions compared with AWS across every service essential to 8x8—compute, network transfer, and storage.
  • In addition, 8x8 saw savings of more than 80% in network egress costs, which is critical with such traffic exceeding 1.5 petabytes a day and growing. Plus, Oracle offers the scale, performance, and low network latency to enable 8x8 to serve millions of end users. For example, organizations relying on Jitsi Meet and 8x8 Video Meetings include WeSchool in Italy, Every Child Pediatrics and Retreat Behavioral Health in the US, and Bionical Solutions in the UK.
  • 8x8 was up and running fast on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, with production workloads running within four days of signing an agreement.
  • Finally, 8x8 realized an expanded sales opportunity for its platform, because its video solutions are available in the Oracle Cloud Marketplace.

Why They Chose Oracle

8x8 moved its video meetings services from AWS to Oracle for substantial performance enhancements. Oracle delivered more than a 25% increase in performance per node on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, global reach, and savings of more than 80% in network egress costs. As a video meeting provider, 8x8 depends on consistent low network latency, significant outbound bandwidth, and large-scale compute services to deliver a great experience to users. “Oracle was absolutely essential for us to continue to be able to provide these video services,” Verma says.
