KDDI shifts critical Exadata workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Japanese telecom operator moves mobile payments platform to OCI for scalability, high performance, and availability.

Oracle Exadata Database Service on OCI meets KDDI’s requirements for high transaction throughput and availability, and we consider it indispensable. For our mission-critical domains such as finance and telecommunications, Oracle is an essential partner.

KDDI, Japan’s second-largest telecommunications provider, needed to modernize its subscriber identity authentication and payment platform to support AI-enabled financial, ecommerce, and mobility services. The carrier’s on-premises Oracle Exadata hardware, burdened by more than 200 integrations added over the years to extend its capabilities, was approaching the end of its renewal cycle.

As a first step, KDDI migrated its Exadata workloads to Oracle Exadata Database Service on Dedicated Infrastructure within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). This shift enables KDDI to handle spikes in payment activities, supporting the high performance and availability subscribers expect while maintaining its existing database management practices.

Transitioning to OCI allowed the company to move from a rigid on-premises environment in which components were highly interdependent to a flexible operating model with minimal disruption to existing applications. To further modernize the platform, KDDI adopted Oracle Kubernetes Engine (OKE). Leveraging OKE’s container-level portability and scalability, KDDI has been able to simplify and improve the quality of new releases while also reducing development and operational costs.
