With Oracle’s Modern Data Platform, we learn about our customers' behavioral performance and use that data to improve future services for our customers. And it’s no exaggeration to say that without Oracle Consulting’s support, what we’ve achieved so quickly would not have been doable.

Business challenges

KDDI, one of Japan’s largest integrated telecommunications companies, provides mobile and fixed-line telecommunication services for over 64 million subscribers. The company continuously gathers and analyzes information, such as customer surveys, to improve customer satisfaction and the quality of telecommunication services. In the past, the telecom spent too much time gathering, consolidating, and visualizing information from potentially thousands of individual sources to serve the needs of end users. If a data source was to be used on a long-term basis, IT staff had to design a custom interface to connect with systems of record.

Because analysis functions were siloed, each function used a separate product, which required specific training and increased costs. As a result, KDDI considered other solutions that could help it establish a connected data management strategy and develop strong data governance.

Why KDDI chose Oracle

KDDI evaluated multiple cloud providers and subsequently completed proof of concept projects with AWS Redshift and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). It selected OCI and Oracle Autonomous Database to replace the company’s existing data management platform. The company was impressed with Oracle Cloud’s extensive portfolio of services, the automation capabilities in Oracle Autonomous Database, and its ability to process and manage extremely large data sets. Additionally, OCI’s low cost of outbound data transfer and support for multiple types of structured and unstructured data were key in boosting KDDI’s multicloud strategy. Oracle Consulting helped guide the implementation based on the support and expertise provided during the proof of concept.

Results

The telecom established a comprehensive Modern Data Platform powered by Oracle Autonomous Database and OCI Integration services. With a data lake that is expected to exceed at least 300TB in 2025, the company can consolidate, aggregate, and analyze content of all types, including industry-standard BSS/OSS formats. The company used OCI Integration services to connect numerous applications and data sources, including custom, on-premises, and SaaS providers, such as Salesforce. Prebuilt adapters simplified low-latency interoperability in the company’s multicloud environment, which spans AWS, Azure, and OCI. This greatly improved the quality and reliability of insights while also reducing operational costs and development time.

With Oracle’s Modern Data Platform, KDDI improved governance and REST API access for broader use. The company benefited from a greater ability to analyze customer behavior to improve future services. Also, it gained better insights into network usage to help weigh investment options, such as where to build new telecommunication base systems.
