Business challenges

Organizations in the retail and consumer packaged goods  industry, such as grocers and other retailers, continue to face supply chain challenges even while customers expect higher levels of service. Accordingly, many firms are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help forecast purchasing trends and to make sure that every store has the optimized number of products in the right place on the shelves.

SymphonyAI provides an enterprise AI-powered solution across the most critical and resilient growth verticals, including retail, consumer packaged goods, finance, manufacturing, media, and IT/enterprise service management.

Historically, SymphonyAI was deployed only on customer on-premises environments. Customers had to provision their infrastructure to support fluctuations in demand, which are common within these industries. Having adequate computing resources to support periods of peak demand meant that systems were underused when demand was low, which led to higher costs. Consequently, SymphonyAI’s leadership decided to evaluate cloud providers that could help transition the product to a SaaS delivery model that would bring consistency in performance and cost across all customers.

Why SymphonyAI chose Oracle

SymphonyAI’s technology leadership considered cloud offerings from Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud. The company ran benchmarks to evaluate the cost and performance of each solution. Based on the results, and on the company’s previous experience working with Oracle, SymphonyAI’s leadership determined that Oracle offered the best service level agreement for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

Also, migrating to OCI would help the company match customers to the optimal Oracle database based on performance and pricing requirements. Oracle Exadata Database Service  would provide the highest levels of performance and scalability for SymphonyAI’s large customers, while Oracle Base Database Service offered the ideal balance of cost and performance for small and medium-size customers.

Results

SymphonyAI now runs its SaaS solution, Symphony Gold, exclusively on Oracle databases and OCI. Customers can select one of four OCI configurations based on their size and SLA requirements. This brings the optimal balance of performance, security, and cost. Because of OCI’s scalability and elasticity, customers pay only for the resources they consume. All OCI configurations support autoscaling to the varying workloads of each customer.

An ROI value assessment of supply chain performance improvement conducted with key retail customers over two years determined every $1 invested yielded an approximate 7X improvement in profit as retailers gained increased flexibility, efficiency, and supply chain agility.

All customers also benefit from establishing fully managed disaster recovery on OCI. Oracle FastConnect allows customers to easily connect directly to OCI via dedicated, private, and high-bandwidth connections.
