Business challenges

Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, the Little Group is a family-owned business with diverse business and philanthropic interests spanning multiple industries including real estate, hospitality, transportation, and the arts.

Little Group had long relied on Oracle JD Edwards (JDE) financial management applications hosted in on-premises data centers. The firm operates with a small IT staff, who use a variety of technology partners to manage the JDE ecosystem and its related applications and integrations. Over time, too many resources were dedicated to developing and maintaining dozens of custom and third-party integrations required to support operations. The lack of commonality in processes, applications, and integrations from one business to another exacerbated these challenges. Often, data had to be manually entered into numerous applications and replicated in multiple databases.

Consequently, Little Group wanted to reduce the company’s reliance on on-premises infrastructure with two goals in mind. First, it wanted to migrate Oracle JDE to a cloud platform that would reduce the reliance on expensive on-premises data centers and provide elasticity and scalability to match the peaks and valleys in business demand. Second, it sought cloud-based automation technologies that would lessen mundane maintenance tasks.

Why Little Group chose Oracle

Oracle submitted a proposal to migrate Little Group’s Oracle JDE to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), which included a compelling plan offered by Oracle Cloud Lift Services to expedite and simplify the migration along with mitigating the involved risks. Based on this level of support, along with the strong existing relationship, OCI was the natural choice for moving Oracle JDE to the cloud.

Little Group also selected Oracle Autonomous Database and Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP) based on their ability to support diverse data types and allow for automated tuning, scaling, and patching at the highest performance, availability, and security levels.

In addition, the company chose Oracle Application Integration to reduce the complexity and time spent on application and data integrations within the JDE environment.

Little Group modernized its disaster recovery plans on OCI with a Recovery Point Objective of less than 10 minutes and a Recovery Time Objective of 60 minutes.

Results

Oracle Cloud Lift Services assisted Little Group in migrating Oracle JDE to OCI, which eliminated the need for servers on-premises associated with those environments. OCI and Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP)  provided higher levels of security for the Oracle JDE environment than what the organization had experienced with its legacy infrastructure. Oracle Autonomous Database, enhanced automated maintenance and performance capabilities. This freed up Little Group’s internal IT staff to focus more on innovation instead of database maintenance.

Using Oracle Integration Services, Little Group greatly expedited and simplified integrating Oracle JDE with complementary applications and external cloud services. Oracle Integration Services’ recipes and accelerators helped to greatly reduce manual data entry. With the integrations enabled by Oracle Integration Services, data is brought in nightly so that decisions can be made in close to real time. This enhanced Little Group’s ability to make more insightful, data-driven decisions and provide more sophisticated reporting to executives.

Also, disaster recovery environments were migrated to OCI, delivering predictable Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO). In testing, the RTO for the entire Oracle JDE environment was just under 60 minutes, while the RPO executed in less than 10 minutes.

With OCI, Little Group reduced its reliance on third-party IT consulting services, lowering support costs and increasing self-sufficiency. The internal IT group was free to focus more on business analysis rather than systems maintenance.

Partners

Oracle Cloud Lift Services provided extensive support for Little Group’s migration of the JD Edwards application to OCI and helped to set up a disaster recovery environment for the JD Edwards application on OCI. The JAPAC team drew on a lot of expertise internally to ensure a successful and easily manageable JDE solution on Oracle Cloud.
