The Sun Oracle Database Machine provides an optimal solution for all database workloads, ranging from scan-intensive data warehouse applications to highly concurrent OLTP applications. With its combination of smart Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software, complete and intelligent Oracle Database software, and the latest industry standard hardware components from Sun, the Database Machine delivers extreme performance in a highly-available, highly-secure environment. With Oracle's unique clustering and workload management capabilities, the Database Machine is also well-suited for consolidating multiple databases onto a single grid. Delivered as a complete pre-optimized and pre-configured package of software, servers, and storage, the Sun Oracle Database Machine is simple and fast to implement and ready to tackle your large-scale business applications.

Database Machine Models

There are three models of the Database Machine - Database Machine Full Rack, Database Machine Half Rack, Database Machine and Database Machine Quarter Rack - are offered. Depending on the size and purpose of the database to be deployed, and the processing and I/O bandwidth required there is a system available to meet any need. Each Database Machine runs the same software, is upgradeable and includes common hardware components. Common to all Database Machines are:

  • Exadata Storage Servers, either SAS or SATA.
  • Industry standard Oracle Database 11g database servers with: two Intel Xeon dual-socket quad-core E5540 processors running at 2.53 Ghz processors, 72 GB RAM, four 146 GB SAS drives, dual port InfiniBand Host Channel Adapter (HCA), four 1 Gb/second Ethernet ports, and dual-redundant, hot-swappable power supplies.
  • Sun Quad Data Rate (QDR) InfiniBand switches and cables to form a 40 Gb/second InfiniBand fabric for database server to Exadata storage server communication and RAC internode communication.

The ratio of components to each other, and other hardware included, has been chosen to maximize performance and ensure system resiliency.

A single Database Machine can:

  • Scan user data at speeds up to 500GB/sec (when scanning compressed data)
  • Provide up to 1 million I/O's per second (IOPS)
  • Load data at 5TB/hr
  • Store up to 140TB of user data (when compressed)

Sun Oracle Exadata Storage Server

Sun Oracle Exadata Storage Server is a storage product highly optimized for use with the Oracle database. Exadata delivers outstanding I/O and SQL processing performance for data warehousing applications by leveraging a massively parallel architecture to enable a dynamic storage grid for Oracle Database 11 g deployments. Exadata is a combination of software and hardware used to store and access the Oracle database. It provides database aware storage services, such as the ability to offload database processing from the database server to storage, and provides this while being transparent to SQL processing and your database applications. Exadata storage delivers dramatic performance improvements, with unlimited I/O scalability, is simple to use and manage, and delivers mission-critical availability and reliability to your enterprise.

Exadata Storage Server Smart Flash Cache

Each Exadata cell comes with 384 GB of Smart Flash cache. This solid state non-volatile flash delivers dramatic performance advantages with Exadata storage. It provides a ten-fold improvement in response time for reads over regular disk; a hundred-fold improvement in IOPS for reads over regular disk; and is a less expensive higher capacity alternative to memory. Overall it delivers a ten-fold increase performing a blended average of read and write IOPS across Smart Flash and regular disk.

Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression

The most advanced data compression technologies are included in the Oracle Exadata Storage Server, saving significant disk space for primary, standby and backup databases and improving the performance of Data Warehousing queries. Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression reduces the size of Data Warehousing tables by 10x (ten times) on average, and reduces the size of archive tables by up to 50x (fifty times). In most cases, query performance is improved by an amount similar to the size reduction. Compressed tables are still fully accessible for SQL access, including selects, updates, inserts and deletes.
