- Ensure an efficient global supplier management process—a key component to Cisco’s business that is heavily outsourced—that enables the company to holds its suppliers to a high level of performance in terms of sustainability
- Develop an agile and innovative technology environment that enables Cisco to quickly adapt to complex supply chain requirements resulting from years of heavy mergers and acquisitions activity
- Transform operationally to meet key sustainability measures including emission reductions and lower energy use
Results
- Helped Cisco to work more efficiently with suppliers in terms of product service repair, support, and end-of-life management—using Oracle applications to track where a product is located, match its serial number and version number, and then determine whether it gets repaired (the highest form of environmental responsibility) or goes to Cisco’s global scrap program that enforces local, regional, and global waste requirements
- Ensured that 100% of Cisco’s key manufacturing and logistics suppliers reported their GHG emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which partners with businesses to measure their carbon footprint so they can work to reduce it
- Supported Cisco’s “Pack it Green” initiative—a packaging program that prioritizes reduction in carbon emissions and energy use—by maintaining, managing, and optimizing packaging with Oracle’s Agile Product Lifecycle Management applications, helping the company to save close to 1,500 metric tons of GHG emissions annually
- Used Oracle Business Intelligence to drive Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) Code of Conduct compliance—a critical tool used at Cisco to extract sustainable behavior from its suppliers
- Enabled Cisco to effectively monitor its suppliers’ compliance with its Code of Conduct—via a periodic Code of Conduct survey with its supply chain partners, for example—thus allowing the company to ensure that it is effectively enforcing sustainability requirements and that its factory workers are receiving ethical treatment
- Used, along with its Code of Conduct, the EICC audit protocol to ensure the standards that support Cisco’s sustainability goals and initiatives are upheld by its suppliers—by using Oracle Database to manage and analyze audit results to drive corrective actions
- Adopted EICC’s Conflict-Free Sourcing Initiative, and made advancements toward a conflict-free supply chain by managing product engineering designs and component qualifications using Oracle’s Agile Product Lifecycle Management
- Helped Cisco to achieve product and environmental compliance by using Oracle Sourcing, Oracle Purchasing, and Oracle Inventory Management
- Worked with Oracle to co-develop the Cisco Unified Computing System, which offers a scalable, high-performance computing platform for running all Oracle databases and applications—in line with Cisco’s GHG emissions reduction goals

Cisco submits declarations electronically out of Pincvision’s central office in The Netherlands. Cisco has access to the Pincvision Environmental Compliance Dashboard 24 hours a day, seven days a week to have full control over the process. This unique combination of resources (Cisco supply chain, Oracle data, and Pincvision execution) puts Cisco in the position of being compliant using the most efficient process.
