Established in 2014 after the merger of KEB Card Co., Ltd. and Hana SK Card, KEB Hana Card Co., Ltd.—a subsidiary of Hana Financial Group—offers credit card and debit card services to individuals and corporations in Korea. To rebuild KEB Card’s brand reputation and become a global leader in mobile payment market, KEB Hana Card’s vision is to provide new products and services by introducing Smart Banking innovations and leading customers to a “smart life.”

Challenges
  • Improve back up performance and efficiency and restore up to 50 terabytes (TB) of credit card data in the electronic account system due to the growth of card users and ecommerce transactions
  • Minimize the risk of data loss by ensuring continuous data protection for credit card transactions and meet financial security regulatory requirements
  • Reduce backup storage consumption and increase scalability to support the company’s growth strategy in the credit card industry
Results
  • Reduced average database backup volume by 30x—just 1.4 TB instead of 39 TB—and increased operating efficiency by replacing EMC’s Data Domain with Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance to enable incremental-forever backups for credit card transactions instead of full backups
  • Minimized data loss exposure by reducing recovery point objective to less than a second instead of minutes, enabling the financier to restore more than US$850 million credit card transactions each month without data loss and meet financial security compliance requirements
  • Increased backup storage capacity by 65%—using only 33 TB of backup space for 62 TB of databases—and supported business growth by gaining 94% deduplication rate with virtual full backup and enabling the company to extend data retention policy to 21 days instead of 7 days
  • Performed database backup 13x faster—in just 50 minutes instead of 11 hours—and increased IT infrastructure flexibility and manageability by using incremental-forever backup architecture to back up only the changed data in the electronic account system and minimize the impact on database performance during the backups
  • Ensured continuity of credit card business operations and reduced business risk in the event of a disaster or outage by automatically replicating backup data to Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance at a remote site daily
  • Improved data protection management and reduced backup and recovery complexity by standardizing Oracle Database backups across the enterprise and applying data protection policy based on database tiers

We selected Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance over Data Domain because only Oracle could offer the incremental-forever backup feature, enabling us to virtually eliminate data loss exposure and ensure data security.

— Iljoon Lee, Senior Manager, IT Team, KEB Hana Card Co., Ltd.
