Oracle Database Appliance made it possible to consolidate 20 servers on a single hardware platform and reduce our annual maintenance costs by more than $250K. This great achievement will boost our competitiveness in the educational applications market.

Infinitas Learning Reduces Maintenance Costs for Database Infrastructure by 60%, Boosts Performance with Engineered Systems

Infinitas Learning is one of Europe’s leading providers of innovative and engaging teaching and learning resources. The firm is composed of several learning companies, three of which share an IT infrastructure, and each with a customized functional setup: Liber (Sweden), Plantyn (Belgium), and Noordhoff (The Netherlands). Infinitas Learning uses Oracle Databases to run its back-office functions, data warehouses, and enterprise applications.

On the organization’s legacy server infrastructure composed of 26 Oracle Databases on 20 HP servers, it could take up to 8 hours to process customer relationship management (CRM) and financial transactions related to the firm’s main learning application, Klopotek. Moreover, the infrastructure was extremely costly and time-consuming to maintain, which prompted Infinitas Learning to seek a new hardware platform capable of concurrently supporting diverse workloads including Structured Query Language.

Business Challenge
  • Create an environment capable of supporting high database workloads for teaching and learning applications across Infinitas Learning companies located in Sweden, Belgium, and The Netherlands
  • Lower the more than $400K annual maintenance cost of managing Infinitas Learning’s database infrastructure by consolidating 20 HP servers on a single hardware platform
  • Strengthen agility and decision-making capabilities by substantially reducing transaction processing times and achieving faster loading to data warehouses for learning solutions and enterprise applications such as CRM and financials
  • Improve database manageability, free IT staff from administrative tasks, and lay the foundation for moving to Oracle Database 12c by standardizing all Oracle Databases to a single version
Results
  • Helped Infinitas Learning to stay at the forefront of a booming educational market by facilitating high database workloads for customer-facing teaching and learning applications on a single hardware platform, Oracle Database Appliance, optimized for Oracle Database workloads
  • Reduced physical footprint from 20 legacy servers to a single Oracle Database Appliance, saving 60% per year on infrastructure maintenance, floor space, and energy consumption costs
  • Increased transaction speed by 40%—from 250 to 350 transactions per second—for faster data-intensive workloads such as real-time business reports, boosting the firm’s capability to identify opportunities on the growing domestic and global educational market
  • Achieved high availability for the organization’s main learning solution Klopotek by running the clustered Oracle Databases using Oracle Real Application Clusters, enabling Infinitas Learning to improve its educational offerings and customer service
  • Gained the ability to process database workloads in the event of a server failure and reducing the amount of time databases are taken offline for planned maintenance operations
  • Enabled the organization to operate customized database setups for learning companies in Sweden, Belgium, and The Netherlands by creating separate instances on Oracle Database Appliance, protecting all entities against unplanned and planned downtime
  • Improved database manageability substantially by upgrading 26 Oracle Databases from different versions to a single version on Oracle Database Appliance, while also preparing for a planned upgrade to Oracle Database 12c
  • Leveraged Oracle Consulting and Oracle Partner Transfer Solutions for achieving a fast and trouble-free migration, with the first Oracle Database go-live on the appliance within 6 weeks and a migration of all remaining databases within 9 months

The Oracle Database Appliance was the most cost-efficient infrastructure for our numerous databases and fits perfectly for our mixed workload data warehouse environment. I have not found a similar value proposition among Oracle’s competitors.
