From: Oracle Corporation
Minor Subject: Patch available for default settings of directory indexing
Product(s) Affected: BEA WebLogic Server and Express Version 6.0
Threat Level: Low
A potential vulnerability has been identified where the default settings for indexing directories can sometimes allow directories to be viewed even when an index.html file is in the directory. BEA treats such possibilities with the highest degree of urgency and does everything possible to ensure the security of all customer assets. As a result, we strongly suggest the following action:
I. Read the following advisory.
II. Apply the suggested action.
III. If you know of any additional users interested in future security advisories, please forward them the registration instructions below.
IV. If you would like to report a possible security issue in a BEA product, please send email to the BEA email address listed below.
I. ADVISORY
Recently, Defcom ( www.defcom.com), an Internet security firm in Stockholm Sweden, reported a potential security vulnerability in BEA WebLogic Server and Express version 6.0.
Each deployed application in WebLogic Server has a default setting that enables directory indexing (displaying of all files in the directory). This default can be changed for each deployed application in the Administration Console in the "DeploymentsWeb/Applications" node by unchecking the "Index Directories" check box under the "Configuration/Files" tab.
Using the default setting, the presence of a index.html or index.jsp file in the directory will display that file rather than the directory index listing. However, even when there is an index.html or an index.jsp file in the directory there are some circumstances that can lead to the listing of the directories within the web application's root directory.
This advisory covers the following releases of BEA WebLogic Server and Express:
CAUSE
There are some carefully created URL's that can bypass displaying the default file (i.e.: index.html or index.jsp) and allow the directory listing to be sent back from the server.
II. SUGGESTED ACTION
Oracle strongly recommends the following course of actions:
Oracle strongly suggests that customers apply the remedies recommended in all our security advisories. Oracle also urges customers to apply every Service/Maintenance Pack as they are released. Service/Maintenance Packs include a roll-up of all bug fixes for each version of the product, as well as each of the prior Service/Maintenance Packs. Service/Maintenance Packs.
As a policy, if there are any security-related issues with any Oracle product, Oracle will distribute an advisory and instructions with the appropriate course of action. Because the security of your site, data, and code is our highest priority, we are committed to communicating all security-related issues clearly and openly.
