It enables you to develop and deploy Oracle Java Enterprise Edition applications through Oracle Cloud Marketplace.

  • Which releases of Oracle WebLogic Server and domain types (JRF/non-JRF) are supported?

The supported Oracle WebLogic Server releases are 11g (10.3.6) and 12cR2 (12.2.1.3 and 12.2.1.4). Both JRF and non-JRF domain types are supported.

  • What editions (product levels) are supported?

Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is offered in two editions.

Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure includes Oracle WebLogic Server features such as clustering, integration with external databases, management and monitoring through the administration console, WebLogic Scripting Tool, and REST management APIs.

Universal credit pricing is also available for Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

  • Are there any prerequisites for using Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

You must have the ability to provision Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, including the ability to create compute instances, networks, and load balancers in the selected compartment.

You also must use Oracle Key Management Cloud in order to protect the WebLogic administrator password used in your configuration. For low-cost key management, do not select the "Make It a Virtual Private Vault" checkbox when creating your vault, so the vault will not be created as a dedicated partition.

Databases or database services, such as Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure database services, are not prerequisites. However, databases are typically required for Oracle WebLogic Server applications, and must be purchased or provisioned separately as required for your environment.

  • Why do I need Oracle Key Management Cloud as a prerequisite?

It is required because the server and database passwords have been encrypted using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s key management service. And the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure policy that allows compute instances in the selected compartment also uses keys.

  • Oracle Java Cloud Service and Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure are both platforms for running WebLogic Server on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. What is the difference between them?

Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is a completely customer-managed solution. Customers have full flexibility in how they configure, maintain, scale, and back up the environment, including the use of automation tools and patch levels.

Oracle Java Cloud Service is also managed by the customer, but Oracle provides lifecycle operations tooling that limits the flexibility of how customers can manage the environment.

  • Can I provision a load balancer with Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

Yes. You can also provision a load balancer to distribute application traffic across the servers in your cluster.

  • What is the default deployment topology for Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

Oracle WebLogic Server is run in separate compute instances. The first compute instance contains the administration server, the first managed server, and a node manager process. Additional managed servers are provisioned on separate compute instances together with node managers. The default deployment topology may be modified by the user following initial provisioning. When provisioning domains with Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure tooling, all WebLogic Server instances are deployed in the same availability domain (AD) but in different fault domains within that AD.

  • What is needed to provision a JRF domain with Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

To provision a JRF domain, an existing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure database or Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing database is required. Your database should have been provisioned before provisioning Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

  • Is it possible to build a highly available deployment with Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

You can use all the high-availability capabilities of Oracle WebLogic Server including clustering, node manager, service migration, and so on. When provisioning domains with Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure tooling, all WebLogic Server instances are deployed in the same availability domain (AD) but in different fault domains within that AD.

  • When Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure domains are provisioned on a private subnet, a bastion is created. Can the same bastion be reused when provisioning more Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure domains in the same subnet?

No. A new bastion is always provisioned for new Oracle WebLogic Server for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure domains for security reasons. To minimize costs, customers can stop or delete particular bastions after provisioning domains.
