Safely consolidate multiple applications onto one system and increase your utilization rates with the advanced functionality of Oracle Solaris 10. Run Oracle Solaris 8, Oracle Solaris 9 and Oracle Solaris 10 applications in Containers (also known as Zones) on the latest systems and save on power, space, cooling, administrative, and support costs.
With the escalating costs of managing your vast networks of servers and software components, you're looking for new ways to reduce IT infrastructure costs and better manage service levels. Consolidating multiple applications onto a single system means changing the way they're deployed, and this can be a very expensive solution. And that's where Oracle Solaris Virtualization and the Oracle Solaris Operating System comes in.
Oracle Solaris Containers uses virtualization to allow you to maintain the one-application-per-server deployment model, while sharing hardware resources. Oracle Solaris Containers is part of a comprehensive offering of Oracle Solaris virtualization technologies which includes Oracle VM Server for SPARC (previously Logical Domains (LDoms)).
With Oracle Solaris Containers you can maintain the one-application-per-server deployment model while simultaneously sharing hardware resources. An integral part of the Oracle Solaris 10 Operating System, Oracle Solaris Containers isolate software applications and services using flexible, software-defined boundaries and allows many private execution environments to be created within a single instance of the Oracle Solaris 10 OS.
You can also run your Oracle Solaris 8, Oracle Solaris 9, and Linux applications in Containers on Oracle Solaris 10 and the latest hardware. In other words, the ability to move to the latest hardware is decoupled from the corresponding need to move to the latest version of Oracle Solaris, reducing risks and giving you more time to upgrade your applications directly to Oracle Solaris 10.
Using the built-in virtualization features of Oracle Solaris Containers provides you the benefits of consolidation and business agility in your datacenter today. Oracle Solaris Containers isolate software applications and services using flexible, software-defined boundaries allowing multiple private execution environments to run side by side within a single instance of the Oracle Solaris 10 OS.With each environment having its own identity, separate from the underlying hardware, it behaves as if it's running on its own system making consolidation simple, safe, and secure. Be it a single system development and test environment, a model for rapid application deployment onto your production systems, a way to securely protect your web facing applications or even a consolidation platform; Oracle Solaris Containers provides the solution on choice for the enterprise.
The Oracle Solaris Legacy Containers product bundles together Oracle Solaris 8 Containers and Oracle Solaris 9 Containers. With Oracle Solaris Legacy Containers it's easy to move your existing Oracle Solaris 8 OS and Oracle Solaris 9 OS application environments onto new, cost effective, and more powerful systems running the Oracle Solaris 10 OS.
It's easy with Oracle Solaris 8 Containers and Oracle Solaris 9 Containers to move your existing Oracle Solaris 8 OS and Oracle Solaris 9 OS application environments onto new, cost effective, and more powerful systems running the Oracle Solaris 10 OS. This additional Containers software captures the entire environment of the original source system, either Oracle Solaris 8 or Oracle Solaris 9, and then transfers this environment to a Container running on the target Oracle Solaris 10 system. The automated process of capturing and moving the image makes it easier, safer, and faster to complete and decouples the hardware upgrade from a corresponding OS and application upgrade. Oracle Solaris 8 and Oracle Solaris 9 applications can now run in Containers on Oracle Solaris 10.
This additional Containers software is a unique and elegant software and services solution, developed and supported by the same engineering team that created the original Oracle Solaris 8, 9, and 10 Operating Systems. The end result is either a Oracle Solaris 8 Container or a Oracle Solaris 9 Container: a run time environment that can run the migrated environment on an Oracle Solaris 10 system. Customers can then transition the original application to a native Oracle Solaris 10 application at their own pace while removing the dependency on the original OS. As a result, the migration can be completed in phases reducing risk and gaining more time as needed. The legacy environments can continue to run until they are either retired or redeployed into Oracle Solaris Containers. Multiple Oracle Solaris 8 and/or Oracle Solaris 9 environments can thus be hosted on a single SPARC system, saving money, space, and power while streamlining IT operations.
The offering consists of the following components:
The P2V (physical to virtual) Archiver tool which automatically archives, converts, and moves the original image, either Oracle Solaris 8 or Oracle Solaris 9, to the target Oracle Solaris 10 system.
The Oracle Solaris 8 and Oracle Solaris 9 Containers which is the run time environment for the migrated applications.
A perpetual license and premier support for one year.
Software Support that is included with the product is only for support issues related to the additional Oracle Solaris Legacy Containers software and not for the Oracle Solaris 10 OS. Additionally, an Oracle Solaris 10 support agreement is required for Oracle Solaris 10 related issues.
