Installing the Pre-Built VM
The Database App Development VM includes Oracle Database 18.3, Oracle APEX 18.2, SQL Developer 18.3, and Oracle REST Data Services (ORDS) 18.3. Most importantly all of the labs pre-installed and pre-configured.
Follow these steps to install the VM on your laptop:
Downloading just the lab materials
If you can not install the VM, then you will need another environment, such as Oracle Database Express Edition (XE) and Application Express 18.x or later installed onto your laptop.
If there is strong enough internet connectivity, you could also use Oracle's free hosted-service apex.oracle.com, or Oracle Database Cloud Service.
- Install Oracle VM Virtual Box
- Download the latest Database App Development VM
{Note: This file is approximately 8 GB so will take significant time to download, unless you have a strong internet connection}
- Import the VM into VirtualBox on your machine, which can take up to 20 minutes depending on your machine.
{Note: To instal the VM requires 21 GB of free disk space}
- Update the VM Settings to maximize the System > Base Memory and Processor(s).
- Start the VM.

- Download and install Oracle Database 18c or Oracle Database 11g XE

Download Oracle APEX 18.x or later and update your local installation.
For Oracle Database 11g Express Edition (XE) follow these instructions.
For Oracle Database 18c follow the Application Express - Installation Guide.

Learn how to create your first app based on a spreadsheet. Next you improve the report in the app before adding a calendar. For your second app, you first define some data structures and then generate an app based on your new tables. While all of this sounds daunting you will be amazed at how quickly you went from a spreadsheet to a fully featured, responsive Web app. Who knew creating new database tables could be so easy, and then just as easy to build a great app on top of those tables.

These tutorials demonstrates how to build a working application for managing projects and tasks using some of the latest features of Oracle APEX 18.1. They assume no prior knowledge of Application Express.
These labs can also be utilized for migrating your application development from one environment to another, such as from on-premises to the cloud.
