Niederelbe Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH &Co. KG (Reederei NSB) Gains Cost Transparency, Speeds up Reporting from Hours to Seconds

Niederelbe Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH &Co. KG (Reederei NSB) manages 113 container ships and tankers in six fleets as a service for charter and line shipping owners. The capital providers for these ships, which are operated commercially as a separate business, are banks and issuing houses. NSB is responsible for all costs of operating the ships—from crew and provisions to lubricants and repairs—and has to plan reliably to meet investors’ requirements for timely and complete cost transparency.

Challenges

A word from Niederelbe Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH &Co. KG (Reederei NSB)

  • “For Reederei NSB, the benefit of having Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One is truly immense. We can now create analyses at the touch of a button, something we just did not have before, and this gives us total cost transparency.” – Torge Schulz, Head of Financial Controlling, Niederelbe Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbh & Co. KG

  • Speed up providing quarterly commercial reports for the NSB fleet, which in the past were sometimes only available two quarters later
  • Provide ability to determine in near-real-time the causes of budget overspends on individual ships to take timely remedial action
  • Eliminate errors from manual data entry of accounts for each individual ship
  • Enable benchmarking cost comparisons between sister ships or multiyear cumulative overviews, an ability not provided by the Microsoft Excel

Solutions

  • Implemented Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One to improve data quality and cost transparency
  • Facilitated producing standard reports for each ship in five seconds instead of 45 minutes, due to interfaces between the Oracle business intelligence (BI) and NSB’s administrative accounting systems
  • Introduced analysis reporting that provides oversight of budget overspends and enables managers to investigate causes and take action in a timely manner
  • Created an overview of trends in ship operating costs by ship and month, and cumulatively over longer periods
  • Enabled 25 key users to work with Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One, with future plans to increase the number of users
  • Worked with Oracle Partner Triology GmbH on the implementation and ongoing step-by-step interface building
  • Supported future plans to implement Oracle Essbase to model planning processes
