SAP has gone all-in on the HANA database, rewriting its legacy applications to run on HANA, but customers haven’t climbed aboard the HANA train. According to a 2016 Nucleus Research survey, 6 out of 10 SAP customers said they would not buy SAP again. Among SAP’s core ERP market, the news was even grimmer: 9 out of 10 customers said they would not consider a future investment in S/4HANA.
Research from Morgan Stanley shows a similar sentiment. In last year’s Morgan Stanley AlphaWise CIO survey, 71 percent of SAP customers said they had no plans to upgrade to S/4HANA.

These reactions are not surprising, since SAP has yet to articulate a clear strategy and roadmap for the cloud. If you’re looking at moving finance to the cloud—as many companies are—S/4HANA by itself isn’t enough to get you there.
In order to provide end-to-end business processes like procure-to-pay or order-to-cash in the cloud, SAP needs to combine disparate offerings from several software companies it has acquired. Each of these systems has very different user experiences, security levels, release timing, renewal cycles, and only partial integration—all of which add up to increased complexity for the user and higher costs for the business.
Nucleus Research uncovered a long list of pain points among SAP customers, including:
The upshot is: SAP customers who upgrade to S/4HANA could be stuck with significant support bills, high IT-related overhead costs, disconnected systems, and a lack of innovation and agility.
